Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Vidya Lakshmi Portal and Study Abroad Education Loans.

1. What is the Vidya Lakshmi Portal?
The Vidya Lakshmi Portal is a single-window digital platform developed under the guidance of the Department of Financial Services (Ministry of Finance), Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education), and IBA. It allows students to apply for education loans to over 40 registered government and private banks using just one common application form (CELAF).
2. Can I get a study abroad loan without collateral on the portal?
Yes. Standard guidelines state that loans up to ₹7.5 Lakhs do not require collateral. However, if you secure admission to premier global institutions (Tier A/B lists of specific banks like SBI or BoB), you can secure non-collateral loans ranging from ₹20 Lakhs up to ₹40 Lakhs through schemes like SBI Global Ed-Vantage or BoB Scholar.
3. How many banks can I apply to simultaneously?
Through the CELAF (Common Educational Loan Application Form) on the Vidya Lakshmi Portal, you can apply to a maximum of 3 banks at the same time. It is highly advised to strategically select these 3 banks based on your specific profile, target country, and collateral availability.
4. What is CELAF and why is it mandatory?
CELAF stands for Common Educational Loan Application Form. It is the standardized form accepted by all banks registered on the Vidya Lakshmi portal. It captures your KYC, academic, and financial details in a unified format, eliminating the need to fill out different forms for different banks.
5. Do I need a confirmed admission letter before applying?
Yes. To complete the CELAF and formally submit your loan request to a bank, you must have an unconditional admission offer letter from your target foreign university. The total loan amount is calculated based on the fee structure mentioned in this offer letter (or CAS/I-20 document).
6. How long does bank approval take via the portal?
Technically, once the CELAF and all required documents are successfully uploaded, banks are mandated to clear the status within 15-30 days. However, delays are common if documents are missing. Employing experts to liaise with the bank's processing center can bring approval times down to 10-12 days.
7. What happens if my Aadhaar/PAN details mismatch on the portal?
A mismatch in Name, Date of Birth, or KYC data across your Aadhaar, PAN, and 10th-grade mark sheets is the leading cause of auto-rejection on the portal. You must rectify and update your government IDs before submitting the CELAF to avoid outright denial.
8. How can I track my application status?
Once applied, you can log into your Vidya Lakshmi dashboard anytime. Under the "Application Status" tab, you can view real-time updates from your chosen banks. Statuses range from 'Submitted' and 'In-Progress' to 'Query Raised' or 'Sanctioned'.
9. Are the interest rates lower on the Vidya Lakshmi Portal?
The portal itself does not dictate interest rates; however, because it features schemes from major Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks like SBI, BoB, and PNB, you inherently gain access to the lowest floating interest rates in the market (typically between 8.5% to 10.5%), along with female borrower concessions.
10. Why should I use a consultant for a free portal?
While the portal is free to use, mapping your profile to the correct 3 banks, perfectly filling out the rigid CELAF without errors, and coordinating physical document handovers with local bank branches can be a logistical nightmare. Expert consultants bridge this gap, ensuring your digital application translates to a physical sanction letter smoothly.
